Dubai, United Arab Emirates-Dubai's biennial air show opened on Sunday. The world is still hit by the pandemic and the aviation industry, but it has been hit hard by the coronavirus, but it has gained a firm foothold.

More than 100 American companies participated in the five-day air show, including defense giant Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies, the parent company of Collins Aerospace, which is the largest employer of Cedar Rapids .

Collins Aerospace announced on Monday that it plans to expand the coverage of its Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) on the Saudi Arabian Peninsula.

Cedar Rapids stated on its website that Taqnia Space, a subsidiary of the Saudi Technology Development and Investment Corporation, will oversee the deployment of the ground station.

The company stated that the deployment has improved timely information transfer between pilots and ground operations, among other benefits.

It also announced that it has selected Kuwait Airways’ aircraft to use its ground flight operations and maintenance switches. The switch enables "non-critical" messages to be routed through Internet protocol links, helping to reduce air traffic communications.

Collins Aerospace also demonstrated its work on Seeing Machine eye tracking technology, which aims to incorporate it into its pilot support system product line. The goal is to better track the pilot's alertness by monitoring the eyes and pupil algorithms.

Traditionally, Boeing and Airbus have been the stars of the biennial air trade show, competing for billions of dollars in Gulf Air purchases and finalizing the details a few minutes before the back-to-back press conference.

But this year, due to the weak state of flying and travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dubai's exhibitions are expected to be quieter than in the past.

On the contrary, the first day of the air show attracted the attention of defense and military hardware from countries such as Russia and Israel.

Airbus's blockbuster commercial transaction that day was the sale of 255 new aircraft to Indigo Partners' multiple low-cost airlines. According to the agreement, low-cost airline Wizz Air purchased 102 new aircraft, US Frontier purchased 91, Mexico’s Volaris purchased 39, and South America’s JetSmart purchased 23.

According to Airbus's pre-pandemic pricing, the order value will be much higher than US$30 billion. The company declined to provide any details about the sales price.

Airbus has also won an order for two additional A330 air tankers with the United Arab Emirates Air Force, increasing the country's Airbus multi-purpose tanker transport fleet to five.

The star on the apron outside the exhibition hall is the Russian Checkmate fighter jet, which is displayed to the news media in a custom hangar, with laser lights on display reflecting off the mirrored ceiling.

With a base price of US$35 million, the aircraft is a lower-cost competitor to the US F-35. Since Israel was officially recognized in a deal facilitated by the Trump administration last year, the UAE has been trying to acquire the US F-35. Under the leadership of US President Joe Biden, such sales have slowed.

In a dramatic promotional video, the checkmate fighter soars in a burning orange sky, and when the music and vigorous voice-overs are heard from the aircraft's features in the background, they blow up targets in the desert.

"We are committed to deepening and strengthening this important strategic relationship," said Sean Murphy, Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy.

At the opening ceremony of the U.S. Pavilion, he also thanked the UAE for its assistance in the U.S.-led Afghan evacuation operation.

Boeing brought the new 777-9 passenger aircraft from Seattle, which is the longest flight of the aircraft so far, as it is undergoing continuous testing and awaiting regulatory approval.

Boeing said it will become the world's largest and most efficient twin-engine jet aircraft.

Emirates, the largest airline in the Middle East, has ordered 126 of this 777X, but the Dubai-based airline expressed disappointment with the delay in its delivery, which is not expected to happen before the end of 2023.

Following the normalization of diplomatic relations between Israel and the UAE last year, Israeli companies demonstrated their hardware for the first time at an air show.

The state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries Corporation displayed a series of manned and unmanned naval and aerial drones.

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems of Israel showed off its "drone dome", which can detect and destroy drones with lasers. Someone saw UAE defense officials asking about the range and weight of the anti-UAV system in the Israel Pavilion.

With the introduction of vaccines in many countries around the world, the entire aviation industry is recovering from a net loss of approximately US$138 billion last year.

Nevertheless, the industry will still face losses this year and next year. The International Air Transport Association predicts that airlines will have a net loss of US$11.6 billion in 2022 and a loss of nearly US$52 billion this year.
